Mermaids, manatees, and hybrid representations of both marine beings, offer a good case for debating the construction of an early modern history of exotic natural history, of knowledge construction, evolution and circulation as well as of key actors involved (including local agents across the Atlantic world).

As tempestades fazem parte do nosso mundo, são eventos extremos e inesperados que nos desenraizam totalmente e tornam a vida diária complicada, confusa, caótica, descontrolada. Nos nossos tempos assumem o nome de pessoas e afetam pessoas (1). Já não são o resultado de males humanos, dizem, embora eu acredite que devíamos voltar atrás neste conceito e pensar quais são os atuais pecados da humanidade que nos estão a conduzir  a todos nesta direção, direitinhos para o centro da tempestade, num caminho possivelmente sem retorno. As tempestades sempre existiram, mas não ao ritmo alucinante a que hoje em dia se sucedem. As tempestades sempre existiram, causando morte e destruição na sua passagem. Mas tanta como hoje? Por esse motivo, e tal como todas as situações que não queremos que nos aconteçam, ou para as quais queremos estar prevenidos, a humanidade desenvolveu tecnologia para a previsão destes acontecimentos climáticos.
